Fictitious high school student Layton Pierce developed an educational mobile app that took off, attracting an investor, Creative Technology Investments (CTI). When the app was pulled off the market for its use as a platform for cheating, CTI sued Pierce for negligent misrepresentation and fraud. Both Pierce and CTI will be represented by high school students in the upcoming Mock Trial Competition.
Forty-four high schools will compete in the 18th annual SC Bar Regional High School Mock Trial Competitions on Feb. 24. Students will fill the roles of attorneys, witnesses, bailiffs and timekeepers in the fictitious civil case, Creative Technology Investments v. Layton Pierce.
Students will present the case before a panel of local volunteer lawyers and judges in Charleston, Columbia, Conway, Greenville and Lexington. Each team will be judged on its presentation skills, rather than the legal merits of the case.

Twelve teams from the five regional competitions will advance to the state competition March 9-10 at the Matthew J. Perry Federal Courthouse (901 Richland St., Columbia 29201).
The Mock Trial Program is sponsored by the SC Bar’s Law Related Education (LRE) Division, which was developed in 1976 to improve the ability of teachers to instruct law related education. The program is supported by the Bar’s LRE Committee and made possible through a SC Bar Foundation IOLTA grant and the SC Bar.
