Heathwood Hall Episcopal School took home first place in the 36th annual SC Bar State Mock Trial Competition held March 9-10 at the Matthew J. Perry Jr. Federal Courthouse in Columbia. Nation Ford High School was named first runner-up.
Twelve teams advanced from the Regional High School Mock Trial Competitions in Conway, Georgetown, Greenville, Lexington and Sumter to compete in the state competition. The winning team from Heathwood Hall Episcopal School will represent South Carolina at the National Competition in Reno, Nevada in May.
Participating students from Heathwood Hall Episcopal School were Nico Adamo, Madeline Ashcraft, Alexandra Cowell, Gabriella Cowell, Marra Edwards, Mercedes Perez-Shillington, Alyce Petit, Jett Pindar and Wallace Stuckey. The teacher/attorney coach was Barbara Petit.
Participating students from Nation Ford High School were Muskan Bhadauria, Lauren Coleman, Emma Farrell, Lauren Feeley, Elizabeth Hartman, Guinevere Hartman, Amber Kodell, Cooper Kuess, Leah Letterhos, Emily Madsen and Natasha McNeil. The teacher coaches were James Fitzpatrick, Robert Morris and Sean Shamble. Their attorney coaches were Gary Lemel and Nathan Sheldon.
This year’s Professionalism and Civility Award was presented this year to Wilson High School. The twelve competing teams collectively selected the recipient of this award.
At the state competition, students presented the plaintiff and defense sides of a fictitious civil case, Creative Technology Investments v. Layton Pierce, before a panel of local volunteer lawyers and judges. Each team was judged on its presentation skills, rather than the legal merits of the case.
