During my remarks when I was sworn in as President and in my July column in this magazine, I asked that as members of the South Carolina Bar, we focus on four topics in the coming year. Those areas of focus are (1) access to justice/pro bono; (2) wellness for both our mental and physical wellbeing; (3) diversity in our membership and profession; and (4) and the focus of this column, civility.

When interviewing for this job, I was asked multiple times about my leadership style. That was easy – I am a coach, both figuratively and literally. My husband and I find ourselves on a lot of sidelines coaching and cheering on our kids – we coach our sons in basketball and I coach our daughter in 4-year-old soccer, which is as fun, challenging and exhausting as you might think.

My dad used to talk about connections. Not the connections in the movies that get you a good table at a fancy restaurant – that was not Dad. No, Dad was a chemistry professor for 50 years who would wear the same threadbare, blue clothes (they were always blue) while investing his heart and soul into helping his students and me, his daughter, become the very best versions of ourselves.

Installation of SC Bar President and Officers

The South Carolina Bar held its Annual Assembly on Thursday, May 18, at Huguenot Mill and Loft in Greenville. During the proceedings the following officers were sworn in: Russell T. Infinger of Greenville, president; Shaheena R. Bennett of Moncks Corner, president-elect; Christopher R. Koon of Columbia, treasurer; Nekki Shutt of Columbia, secretary; and J. Hagood Tighe, Immediate Past President.

Celebrating Women's History Month: Susan B. Hackett

Susan Barber Hackett is an Appellate Defender with the Office of Appellate Defense, representing individuals in their appeals following criminal convictions and in post-conviction relief matters. She won the President’s Award from the South Carolina Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers in 2022. In 2020, she won the Gold Compleat Award from the University of South Carolina School of Law and in 2018, won the Martha Browning Dicus Award from the Public Defender Association for demonstrating remarkable competence, zeal, and adherence to the ideals of the legal profession.
