The Young Lawyers Division (YLD) offers a wide range of committees designed to engage, support, and empower early-career attorneys across South Carolina. Each committee provides meaningful opportunities for professional growth, leadership development, service to the community, and connection with peers and experienced members of the Bar.

Bar Convention Committee

The Bar Convention Committee is responsible for curating the Young Lawyers Division’s presence at the annual SC Bar Convention. Members collaborate to design a dynamic experience that balances professional growth with community impact, including the development of a compelling CLE specifically tailored to the needs of early-career attorneys. Beyond the classroom, the committee organizes a meaningful service project to benefit the local community and hosts a premier social event that fosters networking between young lawyers, the broader Bar membership, and distinguished members of the judiciary.  

As a member of the Bar Convention Committee, you will have the opportunity to: 

  • Organize a CLE, coordinate a legal community service project and plan a networking event to take place during the annual bar convention.

Diversity Committee

The purpose of the Diversity Committee is to support a broad scope of diversity within the legal profession; to facilitate opportunities for law students and YLD members to grow in their understanding of diversity in the legal profession; and to promote the equality of opportunity for those seeking careers in the legal profession. The committee is dedicated to creating a more inclusive legal community grounded in respect and appreciation for individual differences. The committee also works with the Bar’s Diversity Committee to engage with the legal community. 

As a member of the Diversity Committee, you will have the opportunity to: 

  • Organize educational programs and events for young lawyers and the Bar.

  • Organize outreach opportunities for college students to encourage interest in the legal profession.

Law Student Committee

The Law Student Committee serves as a vital bridge between the academic and professional legal communities, creating meaningful opportunities for YLD members and law students to connect. By facilitating these interactions, the committee provides students with an early introduction to the resources and professional network of the SC Bar and its Young Lawyers Division. 

The committee hosts a diverse range of engagement events designed to foster mentorship and practical insight, including: 

  • “Donuts and Discourse” and “Pizza and Perspectives,” which offer casual forums for students to engage in candid conversations with practicing attorneys about the practice of law. 

  • “Grab-A-Coffee,” a virtual mentoring initiative that allows for flexible, one-on-one professional guidance.

  • Networking events between young lawyers and law students to build camaraderie and strengthen the future of the South Carolina legal profession.

Lawyer Wellness

The Lawyer Wellness Committee provides programming for young lawyers that promotes mental, emotional, physical, and social wellbeing. This committee strives to provide resources and tools to young lawyers that address work/life balance, stress management, mental health, alcohol and substance use issues, physical health and wellbeing, and other quality of life practices specific to lawyers. The YLD Lawyer Wellness Committee continues with plans to collaborate with the Bar’s Wellness Committee and Lawyers Helping Lawyers to develop programs and events. 

As a member of the Lawyer Wellness Committe, you will have the opportunity to: 

  • Organize educational programs and events for young lawyers and the Bar.

  • Collaborate with the SC Bar Wellness Committee and Lawyers Helping Lawyers.

Professional Development

The Professional Development Committee’s continuing goal is to assist young lawyers in becoming successful in the legal profession by facilitating networking opportunities with other young professionals and providing educational opportunities that focus on relevant issues relating to the profession. These events can vary from after work events with other young professional organizations; lunch and learn events for YLD members; and opportunities for soft skills enhancement, business etiquette tips, business development, coaching and more. Over the last five years, the Professional Development Committee has hosted a monthly lunch series at a few of the federal courthouses in the state, through a partnership with The Hon. Patrick Duffy (ret.) and The Hon. Michelle Childs. Some young professional organizations that the Professional Development Committee works with are the Young Bankers Division, the SC Association of Certified Public Accountants, and the National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors of South Carolina.  

As a member of the   Professional Development  Committee, you will have the opportunity to:  

  • Organize practical professional development events for young lawyers./span> 

  • Organize networking opportunities for young lawyers with the Bar and other young professionals.

Publications

Members of the Publications Committee prepare and update YLD publications. The committee is responsible for the Division’s newsletter, “South Carolina Young Lawyer”, which is distributed quarterly to all YLD members and published on the SC Bar’s website. It includes committee reports, Star of the Quarter spotlights, member stories and articles on relevant topics, practice tips, and moret. “South Carolina Young Lawyer” has received national awards and recognition for the content provided to YLD members. 

As a member of the Publications Committee, you will have the opportunity to: 

  • Solicit and plan for content in “South Carolina Young Lawyer” 

  • Work with SC Bar Communications to organize and plan YLD social media content.

SC Bar Foundation Committee

The South Carolina Bar Foundation Committee introduces young lawyers to the mission of the Bar’s charitable arm: promoting justice by funding civil legal aid and law-related education. As a member, you will gain firsthand insight into the impact of over 50 Bar Foundation grantees that support vulnerable South Carolinians, including survivors of domestic violence, homeless families, and those navigating the legal system without representation. Committee members have the unique opportunity to work alongside these organizations, directly contributing to a stronger, more equitable legal community across the state.  

As a member of the SC Bar Foundation Committee, you will have the opportunity to: 

  • Coordinate events with Foundation grantees and support pro bono efforts around the state.

Transition To Practice Committee

The Transition to Practice (TTP) Committee plays a vital role in supporting the professional integration of newly admitted attorneys into the South Carolina Bar. By focusing on the critical early years of a legal career, the committee facilitates high-impact mentoring relationships that pair experienced practitioners with new members to navigate the practical and ethical complexities of the profession. Through a dedicated series of workshops and career enhancement opportunities, TTP members provide the essential guidance and resources necessary for new lawyers to develop professional habits, build strategic networks, and successfully transition from the academic world to effective practice within a law firm.  

As a member of the Transition To Practice Committee, you will have the opportunity to: 

  • Provide newly admitted attorneys with the confidence to succeed by planning educational events and networking opportunities.

Long-Range Planning Committee

The Long-Range Planning Committee is a new initiative that will act as a strategic architect for the professional future of early-career attorneys, ensuring that the Young Lawyers Division remains relevant and responsive to evolving needs. This committee will develop multi-year frameworks—often spanning three to five years—to guide initiatives in professional development, leadership cultivation, and legal community advocacy. Its primary mission is to identify emerging challenges in the legal marketplace, such as technological shifts or work-life balance concerns, and implement sustainable programs like mentorship pathways and specialized training modules that facilitate the transition from law student to established practitioner. 

As a member of the Long-Range Planning Committee, you will have the opportunity to: 

  • Establish goals for the future of the Young Lawyers Division. 

  • Create guidelines to accomplish future goals.

Education Outreach Committee

The Education Outreach Committee is committed to educating students both about the law and the practice of law. This committee’s goal is, by engaging with students at an early stage, to help build a pipeline of future attorneys who are passionate about upholding our legal system. The focus is to introduce the profession to students and foster an inclusive environment for students to recognize their potential to become an attorney, while participating in events that provide an opportunity to cultivate knowledge and skills that will aid them in their futures. This committee oversees YLD’s participation in Community Law Week during the first week in May. 

As a member of the Education Outreach Committee, you will have the opportunity to: 

  • Organize and participate in events such as Law Day and Constitution Day. 

  • Visit schools and classrooms to teach students about the Constitution and the practice of law. 

  • Make a positive impact on the lives of students in our communities.

Voices Against Violence Committee

The Voices Against Violence Committee educates young lawyers and the public about the challenges victims of violent crime face. This committee encourages advocacy for victims through pro bono services, CLE seminars, and providing hands-on legal support to programs that aid victims of violence. 

As a member of the Voices Against Violence Committee, you will have the opportunity to: 

  • Organize educational programs and events for young lawyers. 

  • Organize outreach and pro bono opportunities for young lawyers.
