The South Carolina Bar held its Annual Assembly this afternoon, Thursday, May 15, at Stone River in West Columbia. During the proceedings the following officers were sworn in: President Christopher R. Koon of Columbia; President-elect Nekki Shutt of Columbia; Treasurer Lindsay A. Joyner of Charleston; Secretary Bradley K. Richardson of Anderson; and Immediate Past President Shaheena R. Bennett of Moncks Corner.
New board members sworn in were 1st Judicial Region R. Scott Dover; 1st Judicial Region Dan Ballou; 2nd Judicial Region Lyndey Bryant; 3rd Judicial Region Kimberly Barr; At Large Candace Shiver; YLD Representative Michael Paul Burch, Jr.; YLD Representative Mary Catherine Harbin; SLD Representative Barbara Ohanesian; SLD Representative Catherine H. Kennedy; ABA State Bar Delegate Roy F. Laney; ABA State Bar Delegate Phylicia Coleman; as well as SLD President Barbara Ohanesian and YLD President La’Jessica Stringfellow.
Retired Chief Justice Kay Hearn issued the oath of office to President Christopher R. Koon.
Koon is Senior Vice President and General Counsel for the Electric Cooperatives of South Carolina, where he has worked since 2006. Prior to this role, Chris served as a federal law clerk to The Hon. Matthew J. Perry Jr. and as an attorney at Nelson Mullins. He earned his Bachelor's degree from Clemson University and his Juris Doctor from the University of South Carolina School of Law.
Immediate Past President Shaheena Bennett reflected on the successes of the past year, celebrating the work of the Bar in the areas of pro bono, traveling the state for our 50th anniversary, and engaging with students across the state via Law Related Education and the SC Bar LawBound program.
