Job Summary
Beaufort County is seeking an experienced attorney to serve as Deputy County Attorney. This position performs advanced professional legal work and provides legal counsel and representation to County departments, officials, boards, and commissions.
Key Responsibilities:
• Provide legal counsel and representation to County departments and officials.
• Represent the County in civil litigation, administrative proceedings, and trial and appellate matters.
• Attend County Council, committee, board, and commission meetings as requested and provide legal advice.
• Draft and review ordinances, resolutions, contracts, deeds, leases, releases, and other legal documents.
• Conduct legal research, prepare legal opinions, and other legal documents.
• Prepare cases for trial, interview witnesses, and analyze applicable law and evidence.
• Provide legal training and guidance to County departments, boards, and commissions.
• Assist with the coordination, review of legal work, and provide guidance to staff as needed.
Minimum Qualifications:
• Juris Doctorate degree.
• More than eight years of related professional experience practicing law, including a minimum of five years of local government experience.
• Experience working with county government in South Carolina is preferred.
• Active license to practice law in the State of South Carolina.
• Rule 403 certification.
• Valid state driver’s license with an acceptable driving history.
Selected candidates will be required to successfully complete applicable pre-employment requirements, including a drug screening and background investigation.
Requirements
Education: Juris Doctorate degree
Experience: Eight years of related professional experience practicing law, including a minimum of five years of local government experience.
