POSITION SUMMARY
The Associate Underwriting Counsel will support underwriting decisions, agent questions, title issue resolution, training, and risk management for the company. This role is well suited for an attorney who enjoys real property law, careful analysis, and practical problem-solving.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
Provide practical underwriting guidance to approved agents, attorneys, paralegals, and internal team members.
Answer questions about title issues, objections, exceptions, curative matters, and transaction-specific risk questions.
Assist with drafting, refining, and maintaining underwriting standards, bulletins, forms, checklists, and training materials.
Support agent education, including occasional classes or presentations for agents and paralegals.
Escalate complex or high-risk matters appropriately while developing independent underwriting judgment.
Partner with the State Manager to improve underwriting operations, service quality, profitability, and consistency.
Assist Sales Representatives when needed to “land” and onboard new agents.
Attend daily, weekly, and monthly team meetings as needed and manage assigned projects through completion.
Protect the company's reputation through careful, courteous, ethical, and commercially reasonable decision-making.
REQUIRED / PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Must be admitted to practice law in South Carolina and in good standing.
Must have 1-2 years of practice; real property law or title abstracting experience is preferred but not required; title insurance experience is a plus but not required.
Strong legal research, writing, analytical, and verbal communication skills.
Good judgment, high integrity, emotional intelligence, and the ability to remain professional under pressure.
Eager to learn all aspects of the title insurance industry.

May telework from a location of the employee's choosing, subject to company needs.
Occasional on-location work and overnight travel may be required.
Must communicate clearly and concisely in proper written and spoken English.
Must have excellent judgment, high emotional intelligence, and obsessive attention to detail without losing sight of the overall picture.
Must be highly organized, deadline-oriented.
Must be comfortable with Google Workspace, modern technology, the responsible use of AI tools such as ChatGPT and Claude, and willing to thoroughly learn the company's software.
PAY & BENEFITS
Salary: $65+ depending on qualifications and cultural fit

LOCATION
South Carolina residency required.
Remote or hybrid work as stated above.
Occasional travel may be required.
