Job Summary
Charleston School of Law, founded on the principle of Pro Bono Populi or for the good of the people, is seeking a dynamic, student-centered professional to serve as Assistant Director of Career Services. Located in the heart of downtown, Charleston School of Law is committed to experiential education, public service, and preparing graduates for meaningful and sustainable legal careers.
The Assistant Director of Career Services plays a critical role in advancing the law school's mission by providing individualized career advising, developing and delivering innovative programming, strengthening employer and alumni engagement, and contributing to improved employment outcomes for students and graduates. This position combines direct student advising with program leadership, employer outreach, teaching, and data reporting responsibilities in support of the Department of Career Services' strategic goals.
The Assistant Director reports directly to the Assistant Dean of Career Services and works collaboratively with the Career Services team, faculty, administrators, alumni, employers, and members of the judiciary.
CORE RESPONSIBILITIES:
Working with Students:
• Provide one-on-one career development counseling services for an assigned cohort of law students and alumni including reviewing/editing resumes, cover letters, and other job application documents; preparing students for legal job interviews; and providing targeted advice on career development and professionalism.
• Deliver weekly classroom presentations to approximately sixty (60) first-year law student advisees regarding career path planning fundamentals as part of fall semester first-year course entitled Section Meeting.
• Develop, coordinate, and deliver career-related programming including the On-Campus Interviews, Resume Collects, Law Links Mentor Program, and Mock Interview Programs, the fall and spring Career Series, annual Speed Networking and Solo Practice CLE events, workshops for summer job experiences, and on-campus career fairs.
• Create career-related resources and educational tools and execute regular multi-channel student communications which may include weekly newsletters and social media postings.
• Coordinate the gathering and reporting of employment information for use in annual ABA and NALP reporting, including communicating with recent graduates to acquire relevant graduate employment information, and compiling and reviewing data.
Working with Attorneys, Judges, Alumni, and Other Law Schools:
• Develop, coordinate, and manage employer outreach and relationship development with the assistance of the Career Services Team to support career-related programming and aid students in growing their own professional networks.
• Cultivate and maintain strong relationships with attorneys, judges, law firms, agencies, organizations, and legal employers, to increase meaningful job opportunities for current students and alumni.
• Develop and expand employer recruitment efforts in markets outside of Charleston, including Rock Hill, Greenville, Charlotte, Atlanta, and Washington, D.C.
• Collaborate with the Career Services Team and other law school’s to facilitate Reciprocity requests from Charleston School of Law students and students from other law schools.
• Attend SC Bar/local bar events, alumni events, and other industry-relevant networking opportunities and represent Charleston Law.
QUALIFICATIONS:
• Juris Doctor degree is required.
• Experience in the practice of law, higher education, student interaction/counseling, teaching, sales, or a related field is required.
• 2+ years of experience as a licensed attorney is preferred.
• Demonstrated track record of working successfully within a team is essential.
OTHER SKILLS:
• Excellent written and oral communication skills and ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously in a fast-paced environment.
• Comfortable speaking to groups and developing new professional relationships.
• Ability to counsel students regarding legal career development including preparation of professional job-related documents.
• Demonstrated ability to manage projects with a high degree of independence, while also contributing collaboratively and providing team leadership.
• Exceptional organizational, time management, and problem-solving skills, with strong attention to detail and a commitment to confidentiality.
• Ability to handle day-to-day administrative functions, including scheduling, maintaining records, coordinating events, and managing communications.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, etc.) and Adobe Acrobat; experience with Canva and Constant Contact preferred, with the ability to quickly learn and utilize internal career services platforms (12Twenty).
• Flexibility and ability to periodically work long hours and/or irregular hours during peak periods (August, September, and May).
