Job Summary
The Municipal Court Judge, a City Council appointed position, performs professional judicial and administrative duties for the City of Greenville. Establishes, reviews, and revises the policies and procedures of the Court. Interprets, applies, and enforces local ordinances and applicable State laws. Oversees the adjudication of misdemeanor criminal, traffic, and City code violations. Ensures relevant South Carolina Court rules, State statutes, City ordinances, etc., are applied when presiding over trials to the Court, trials to the jury, pre-trial conferences, arraignments, etc. Sets annual terms of Court. Responsible for meeting the objectives and goals set by the South Carolina Judicial Department for case flow management. Manages and directs Municipal Court staff. Establishes overall expectations and provides performance feedback to the Court’s management team. Directs the assessment of the Court’s staff development needs and ensures they are addressed through education and training. Prepares and submits Municipal Court budget. Directs the development, implementation and monitoring of fiscal policies, internal controls and procedures ensuring the efficient and accurate fiscal operations. Oversees and monitors the collection and processing of all cash receipts, disbursements, and reconciliation of accounts. Reviews expenditures in the Court to assure sound fiscal control. Confers with City Manager and City Council on a consistent basis regarding court achievements, challenges, and opportunities. Coordinates continuous communications with the Senior Leadership Team, City departments, and non-city governmental agencies.
Requirements
Education: Juris Doctorate Degree from an accredited law school.
Experience: Over 5 years of experience as a judge and/or criminal trial attorney, including substantial jury trial experience.
