Part-Time/PRN Municipal Public Defender

Job Summary

Position Summary:

The City of Cayce is seeking a qualified and motivated attorney to serve as a Part-Time or PRN Public Defender. This position offers a flexible, as-needed schedule with no set hours and is ideal for candidates seeking a part-time public interest legal work in criminal defense.

 

Key Responsibilities:

·        Represent indigent defendants in Cayce Municipal Court, including coverage on:

·        Tuesdays at 8:00 AM

·        Thursdays at 2:30 PM

·        Be available on an as-needed basis for pretrials and jury trials, which may be scheduled any weekday, Monday through Friday.

·        Provide legal counsel to clients from initial appearance through resolution, including advising on plea offers, trial strategy, and sentencing.

·        Maintain timely communication with clients and their families regarding case status and legal options.

·        Work collaboratively with court staff, prosecutors, and law enforcement while maintaining zealous advocacy for clients.

 

Qualifications:

·        Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school.

·        Active membership in good standing with the South Carolina Bar.

·        Experience in criminal defense, public defense, or trial work preferred.

·        Demonstrate strong advocacy skills, legal judgment, and commitment to ethical representation.

·        Valid driver’s license.

 

Compensation Options:

Contract Basis: Hourly compensation based on experience.

OR

Salaried Position: Part-time salary with benefits package (for eligible candidates).

 

Work Schedule:

·        No fixed weekly hours.

·        Availability required for court coverage, scheduled legal proceedings, and responsive communication with clients and court staff as needed.
