ABOUT THE PROGRAM
Bring your family and join us in beautiful Kiawah Island as we honor the memory of Dave Whitener. This workshop will provide a timely and interactive discussion of issues facing real estate practitioners in today’s economy. As we visit this picturesque coastal location, our topics will invoke memories of the spirited songs of ABBA in the week preceding the release of the Mamma Mia sequel.
On Friday, following a continental breakfast, you will participate in a panel discussion concerning construction, development and redevelopment, including environmental issues, zoning matters, development agreements and due diligence. Following the panel, Tricia Wharton Whitener will lead us in a discussion on easements and surveys, including hands-on examples from her own commercial real estate practice. Next, keep current on the law as Bobby Stepp presents a real estate case law update including a fascinating easement case in which he was involved that may have substantially changed South Carolina law. During lunch, we will hear an update on opinion practice from the three lawyers who worked together to develop a form opinion letter for our use, Jennifer Blumenthal, Bill Higgins and Mark Sharpe.
Enjoy an afternoon on your own, and then on Friday, take your family to an evening reception at beautiful Osprey Point Clubhouse. This venue offers stunning views, which may or may not include an alligator or two.
A very special segment is planned for Saturday morning following our continental breakfast. Lawyers aren’t often fortunate enough to participate in field trips, but Professor Josh Eagle will take us on a field trip to the beach to discuss the law surrounding beachfront management, base lines and setback lines. Professor Medlin describes this presentation as “brilliant in its simplicity.” Closing this year’s program will be a riveting presentation on ethical issues facing attorneys in and out of the workplace led by Professor Alan Medlin.
