The Children's Law Center at the University of South Carolina School of Law seeks a Child Welfare Attorney Trainer. Children’s Law Center, USC Law School, Band 07.  $52,073 or commensurate with experience.  State benefits included.  

Job Duties

Develops and conducts legal training for Department of Social Services child welfare staff.  Serves as one of the primary trainers for initial legal training for new caseworkers and participates as an attorney in mock hearings.  In coordination with the DSS Office of General Counsel, plans and coordinates continuing legal education programs for attorneys and training for paralegals. 

Minimum Qualifications

Include a law degree, membership in good standing in the South Carolina Bar, and at least 3 years of relevant experience, including experience as an attorney in child protection proceedings.  Must have substantial knowledge of federal and state child protection statutes, related case law, court rules, and practices.  Must be familiar with DSS programs and procedures.  Must have excellent communication skills, research and writing skills, and the ability to work independently while also functioning as a productive and collaborative team member.

Preferred Qualifications

Include experience in developing curricula and conducting training programs.  Prefer familiarity with virtual platforms and use of technology to enhance training.  Prefer obtainment of the children’s law concentration in conjunction with law degree or extensive course work in children’s law.  Experience representing various parties in child protection proceedings (DSS, GAL, parents) would be a plus.
