- Job Responsibilities
Under limited supervision, the Assistant Deputy Attorney General in the Post-Conviction Relief Section assists the Senior Assistant Deputy Attorney General with management of the Section as well as performs professional legal work on behalf of the State of South Carolina in circuit and appellate courts across the State. The Assistant Deputy Attorney General assists in supervising, training, and mentoring legal staff. The Assistant Deputy Attorney General is responsible for post-conviction relief and collateral review litigation to include preparing pleadings and responses to applications for post-conviction relief and habeas corpus petitions, conducting legal research, representing the State at evidentiary hearings and other court appearances in various circuits, and preparing post-hearing memorandums or proposed orders for the court’s consideration as requested by the circuit court. Additionally, the Assistant Deputy Attorney General represents the State on post-conviction relief and collateral review appeals before the appellate courts, including filing appellate pleadings and appearing for oral argument. The Assistant Deputy Attorney General also prepares court rosters and assists in managing the post-conviction relief docket as requested by the circuit court in various circuits. The Assistant Deputy Attorney General also performs other duties as assigned by the Senior Assistant Deputy Attorney General, the Deputy Attorney General of the Criminal Division, the Chief Deputy Attorney General, and/or Attorney General.

- Minimum and Additional Requirements
The Assistant Deputy Attorney General must be a member in good standing of the S.C Bar with at least five years of practicing experience. Prior supervisory experience preferred. Prior appellate and/or collateral review experience preferred. Must have satisfied the Rule 403, SCACR, requirements.
- Preferred Qualifications
The Assistant Deputy Attorney General must be well-organized with a demonstrated ability to work independently and meet deadlines, and must have excellent oral advocacy, legal research, and writing skills. The Assistant Deputy Attorney General should have good computer skills and must be able to transport files to and from court. This position will require some overnight travel.
