Twelve middle school teams throughout the state have advanced to compete in the SC Bar State Middle School Mock Trial Competition on Dec. 2-3 at the Marc H. Westbrook Lexington County Judicial Center.

At the state competition, students will present the prosecution and defense sides of a fictitious criminal case before a panel of local volunteer lawyers and judges. This year’s case is State of South Carolina v. Langley Parker. The case questions who is liable when Jackie Weaver dies of a heart attack during a prank-gone-bad during the filming of a web-based reality series. Students will fill the roles of attorneys, witnesses, bailiffs and timekeepers, and each team will be judged on its presentation skills, rather than the legal merits of the case.

The following schools have advanced to the state competition:

From the Columbia Regional Competition

  • Chapin Middle School – Region Winner
  • Hand Middle School – Wild Card
  • Heathwood Hall Episcopal School – Wild Card

From the Conway Regional Competition

  • Forestbrook Middle School – Region Winner
  • Black Water Middle School – Wild Card
  • Ocean Bay Middle School – Wild Card

From the Georgetown Regional Competition

  • Moultrie Middle School – Wild Card

The Mock Trial Program is sponsored by the SC Bar’s Law Related Education (LRE) Division, which was developed in 1976 to improve the ability of teachers to instruct law related education. The program is supported by the Bar’s LRE Committee and made possible through a SC Bar Foundation IOLTA grant and the SC Bar.
