At the state competition, students will present the plaintiff and defense sides of a fictitious civil case, Creative Technology Investments v. Layton Pierce, before a panel of local volunteer lawyers and judges. Each team will be judged on its presentation skills, rather than the legal merits of the case.

In the fictitious case, high school student Layton Pierce developed an educational mobile app that took off, attracting an investor, Creative Technology Investments (CTI). When the app was pulled off the market for its use as a platform for cheating, CTI sued Pierce for negligent misrepresentation and fraud.

The 2018 state champion will advance to the national competition held in Reno, Nevada in May. For more information about the Mock Trial case or program, visit www.scbar.org/lre.
