COLUMBIA, S.C. (Jan. 30, 2017)—Do you know what your rights and responsibilities are under the law? While you may not be an attorney, it’s important to know the law and how it affects you. The SC Bar Pro Bono Program is sponsoring “Law School for Non-Lawyers,” a seven-week program designed to give the public an overview of the South Carolina legal system and insight into common legal problems people face.
The series will be held on Tuesday evenings, March 7 continuing through April 18, from 6 to 9 p.m. at Central Carolina Technical College (111 S. Main St., Sumter 29150). The deadline to enroll is Thursday, March 2 at noon.
The course will cover the following topics:
- March 7—Overview of state courts and alternative dispute resolution
- March 14—Juvenile justice and overview of child protection hearings
- March 21—Family law, real estate and landlord-tenant law
- March 28—Wills, estates and probate, health care and elder law
- April 4—S.C. workers’ compensation and employment law
- April 11—Bankruptcy law, consumer law and debt collection
- April 18—Criminal law and torts law
"Law School for Non-Lawyers is a wonderful opportunity for the public to learn about the law and the judicial system in South Carolina," said Cindy Coker, SC Bar Public Services Director. "The program is designed to provide the public with the information needed to empower them to make better, more informed decisions and to better understand how the legal system works."
The seven-week course costs $45 and includes all course materials. Registrants are not required to attend all of the classes and may choose to attend only those that interest them the most.
