When talking about end-of-life care, it always seems too early, until it’s too late. During Healthcare Decisions Week, April 15-21, the South Carolina Bar encourages you to start the conversation with your loved ones about advance care planning.

National Healthcare Decisions Day (NHDD) is celebrated nationally on April 16, but to help raise awareness in SC, Gov. Henry McMaster has signed a proclamation declaring the whole week Healthcare Decisions Week in South Carolina.

“[I] encourage all South Carolinians to work together with the legal and medical communities to ensure that an individual’s wishes for healthcare, particularly as it relates to end-of-life care, are prepared, protected and followed,” Gov. McMaster said in the proclamation.

To consult an attorney in preparing advance care planning documents during Healthcare Decisions Week or at any time, call the SC Bar Lawyer Referral Service at 1-800-868-2284. More information about NHDD and free tools to create these forms are available online at www.nhdd.org.

“Making healthcare decisions is difficult, whether it's for yourself or others,” said Cindy Coker, SC Bar Director of Public Services. “I encourage everyone, young or old, to use Healthcare Decisions Week to discuss, decide and cite your healthcare wishes.”
