Do you know what your rights and responsibilities are under the law? While you may not be an attorney, it’s important to know the law and how it affects you.
The SC Bar Public Services Division is sponsoring “Law School for Non-Lawyers,” a program that gives the public an overview of our legal system and insight into common legal problems.
The series is on Tuesday evenings, March 20 continuing through May 1, from 6 to 9 p.m. at York Technical College. The deadline to enroll is Thursday, March 15 at noon.
The course will cover the following topics:
- March 20—Overview of state courts and alternative dispute resolution
- March 27—Juvenile justice and overview of child protection hearings
- April 3—Family law, real estate and landlord-tenant law
- April 10—Wills, estates and probate; health care; and elder law
- April 17—S.C. workers’ compensation and employment law
- April 24—Bankruptcy law, consumer law and debt collection
- May 1—Criminal law and torts law
“Law School for Non-Lawyers is an excellent opportunity for the public to gain a better understanding of how the legal system works,” said Cindy Coker, SC Bar Public Services Director. “The program provides the public with tools to make better, more-informed decisions about their legal issues.”
The seven-week course costs $45 and includes all course materials. Registrants are not required to attend all the classes and may choose to attend only those that interest them.
