In 1958, the South Carolina Bar Association and the USC Law School Faculty established the memorial repository and endowment fund, Memory Hold the Door. The lawyers honored through Memory Hold the Door represent a true honor roll of the legal profession, selected by their peers as best exemplifying the qualities of integrity, professionalism and skill required of the bench and bar. The induction ceremony for this prestigious group is open to all Convention attendees, spouses and guests. Dr. Dale Rosengarten, recipient of the first “Governor’s Archives Award,” will give an entertaining presentation on the origins of the ancient folk art of sweetgrass basket making, including a demonstration. Dr. Rosengarten is the Curator of Special Collections at the College of Charleston Addlestone Library. Her interest in sweetgrass baskets began when she was hired as the guest curator for the Lowcountry Basket Project at the McKissick Museum at the University of South Carolina in 1984. She has since completed her doctoral research on the African origins of the Lowcountry basket and traveled to Senegal with Enid Schildkrout, co-curator of the Gibbes Museum’s Grass Roots exhibit. The pair designed an exhibit titled “Baskets of Two Continents,” which was expanded for a 2005 showing at the Museum of African Art in New York.
