May 27, 2009
COLUMBIA (May 27, 2009) -- Springfield Middle School has been named the South Carolina Bar’s Law Related Education (LRE) Middle School of the Year. The Bar will recognize the school during an awards ceremony at the school on June 5.
Springfield Middle School has completed it’s second year as a competitor in Middle School Mock Trial with its second Middle School Mock Trial State Championship. The program at Springfield Middle School feeds the High School Mock Trial program at Nation Ford High School, positively impacting the quality of the program at the high school. Mock trial teacher Juanita Sanders, who was last year’s LRE Middle School Teacher of the Year, also utilizes the We the People: The Citizen and the Constitution materials within Springfield Middle School. By implementing this and other programs, Springfield Middle School has shown a commitment to helping students gain a greater understanding of their role as citizens in a constitutional democracy.
The Law Related Education Middle School of the Year Award was created in 2001 to honor a South Carolina middle school that best exemplifies the LRE commitment to help students better understand their roles as democratic citizens. Nominations were solicited from teachers, students and lawyers in the LRE school network across the state.
The South Carolina Bar’s LRE Division, which was developed to improve the ability of teachers to instruct law related education, has been a part of the Bar since 1976. This award is made possible through the South Carolina Bar Foundation, and the school may use the money for any purpose it sees fit.
The South Carolina Bar, which has a membership of more than 13,000 lawyers, is dedicated to advancing justice, professionalism and understanding of the law.
