May 27, 2009
COLUMBIA, S.C. (May 27, 2009) -- Honea Path Middle School social studies teacher Richard Simpson has been named the South Carolina Bar’s 2009 Law Related Education Middle School Teacher of the Year. A $500 award from the Bar will be presented to Simpson during an awards ceremony at Honea Path Middle School on June 4.
Simpson was selected for the LRE Middle School Teacher of the Year Award because of his dedication to instilling a deep respect for the law in middle school students. He initiated the Middle School Mock Trial program, the We The People: Project Citizen program and the We the People: The Citizen and the Constitution program at Honea Path Middle School. Simpson serves as a congressional district coordinator for both the Project Citizen and We the People programs for the state of South Carolina. He has also assisted with the Southeast Project Citizen Institute for the past three years.
The Law Related Education Middle School Teacher of the Year Award was created in 2005 to honor a South Carolina teacher who best exemplifies the LRE commitment to help students better understand their roles as democratic citizens. Winners are chosen based on their implementation of LRE curricula and/or programs and commitment to the principles of LRE.
The South Carolina Bar’s LRE Division, which was developed to improve the ability of teachers to instruct law related education, has been a part of the Bar since 1976. This award is made possible through an IOLTA grant from the South Carolina Bar Foundation, and recipients may use the money for any purpose they see fit.
The South Carolina Bar, which has a membership of more than 13,000 lawyers, is dedicated to advancing justice, professionalism and understanding of the law.
