Annual Bar Convention Committee

Promotes YLD’s involvement with the S.C. Bar Convention by planning, organizing and implementing a CLE program and attendance incentive event. The CLE component will offer a program that is of interest to young lawyers and provide at least three CLE credit hours for attendees. The attendance incentive event will be a social gathering for members of the YLD and their guests. Its purposes are to increase young lawyer participation at the Convention and in Bar/YLD activities. Additionally, the committee will be responsible for planning and organizing a meeting for the YLD Executive Council, committee chairs and co-chairs.

Courthouse Keys Committee

Holds a series of informal breakfasts, “Java with the Judges,” lunches and other events to allow small groups (up to 20 participants) of young lawyers an opportunity to meet local judges. The judges will be asked to provide “pearls of wisdom” to the young lawyers in attendance.

Diversity/Minority Impact Committee

Conducts a comprehensive examination of diversity issues within the S.C. Bar and develops methods by which the Young Lawyers Division can promote racial, cultural and gender diversification in its projects, leadership and outreach. Projects include the Black Law Students Association (BLSA) Mentoring Program & Symposium, Commission on Diversity, Minority Clerkship Program, Minority Pre-Law Conference & Mentor Program, “Mothers-in-the Law: Balancing Family &  Work” luncheon panels and The Color of Justice.

BLSA Mentorship Program & Symposium
In conjunction with the Black Law Student Association (BLSA), this committee will provide minority law students with resources, support, guidance and practical expectations associated with the practice of law as a minority. The committee will facilitate the 1L Mentoring Program, partnering 1L students with SCBLA members, and hold a symposium in September. The symposium will consist of panel discussions on diversity issues and will introduce the 1L Mentoring Program and its participants.

Commission on Diversity
Conducts a comprehensive examination of diversity issues within the S.C. Bar and develops a report and recommendations to introduce and/or improve solutions to competitive challenges facing minority practitioners in S.C. This will include a detailed evaluation of diversity programming in other state bars. In addition, this committee will host a symposium in May.

Minority Clerkship Program
Provides legal employers with access to first-year law students of diverse backgrounds; enhances law student academic education with practical, real-business legal work experience; exposes law students to varied legal employment opportunities; and provides full-time, limited-term summer clerkship experiences with premier legal organizations.

Minority Pre-Law Conference & Mentor Program
Encourages minorities to pursue legal careers. The conference allows individuals wishing to pursue legal careers to meet with law school recruiters from across the country to learn how to prepare for law school admissions. Participants are exposed to the admissions and financial aid process, LSAT preparation, an attorney panel and mock trial. This year the program will pair program participants with mentors who will provide practical guidance for them as they prepare to enter law school.

Mothers-in-the-Law: Balancing Family & Work

A lunch and learn panel discussion focusing on how the practice of law can be balanced with motherhood, including organizational skills, childcare issues and when to ask for extra help. This is a wonderful chance to ask women exactly how family and the practice of law can fit together.

The Color of Justice
Sponsored by the National Association of Women Judges, the purpose of this program is to introduce the field of law to junior high and high school minority students. The program will include a panel discussion and breakout sessions with judges, attorneys, law professors and law students. Students will be broken into teams of five or more and paired with a professional(s). Each group will discuss their interest in pursuing a legal career and address concerns relating to the practice of law. Afterwards, each team will reconvene and summarize discussions from their group session.

Membership Publicity Committee

Responsible for getting young lawyers involved with the Young Lawyers Division and introducing new members of the S.C. Bar to the Division. In addition to continuing existing programs, the committee will identify young lawyers not previously involved in the YLD and the S.C. Bar. Informational packets/committee sign-up brochures will be distributed to law students during Bridge the Gap (BTG). A brief presentation on YLD opportunities will also be given during BTG, additional member events will be planned throughout the state and receptions will be held in November and May for new admittees.

This committee will also host the Carolina/Clemson Pep Rally. Proceeds from this event will be donated to a local children’s charity. This committee will solicit donations for a silent auction, supplies and entertainment; find a low-cost or donated venue; and conduct other support planning. This event will take place in November.

Professional Development Committee
Hosts programs for young lawyers on becoming a rainmaker; starting a law firm; balancing personal life with professional life; public speaking; and improving skills as a young lawyer. Programs include a half-day CLE event for first to third-year lawyers on issues relevant to beginning the practice of law and breakfast or lunch networking events. The committee will continue to host joint programs with the S.C. Association of Certified Public Accountants and possible programs with financial advisors, medical residents and student body groups.
