Minutes February 2007

Tax Law Section Council Meeting Minutes
February 8, 2007

The Tax Law Section Council met this date via conference call. Participating members included Jeff Z. Brooker III, Randy E. Fisher, Maurice D. Holloway, J. Tod Hyche and Timothy C. Thompson.  Representing the Bar staff was Tara G. Smith.

Chairperson Brooker called the meeting to order.

The first item of business was approval of the minutes from the August 29, 2006, meeting. Mr. Brooker moved approval of the minutes. The motion was seconded, and it was approved.

The next item of business was discussion on the FY2007-08 Council nominations. It was reported that Mr. Hyche would be unable to serve as Chairperson-Elect but agreed to fill one of the Council member vacancies. It was suggested to rotate the officer positions and approach George McDowell Jr. to serve as Secretary, leaving a vacancy for his unexpired term. Mr. Brooker and Mr. Holloway were to inform Rick Reames and Jack Muench of the Council’s decision. Ms. Smith was to verify Mr. McDowell’s interest in serving on the Council and then solicit the Section members for the Council member vacancy, term expiring in 2008. The proposed FY2007-08 slate was as follows:

Officers
Chairperson: Maurice D. Holloway
Chairperson-Elect: James F. Reames III
Vice-Chairperson: John H. Muench
Secretary: George McDowell Jr.
Section Delegate: Paul M. Lynch
Immediate Past Chairperson: Jeff Z. Brooker III

Council Members
Shawn Flanagan, term expires 2008
Vacant, term expires 2008
Robert E. August, term expires 2009
Timothy C. Thompson, term expires 2009
J. Tod Hyche, term expires 2010
Aaron Schaal, term expires 2010

It was suggested that Mr. Reams be moved to the position of Chairperson-Elect, and that the positions of Vice-Chairperson and Secretary be filled by Council members.

Next, Mr. Brooker presented a brief overview of the Section CLE in conjunction with the 2007 Bar Convention. He opined that participation was less than anticipated due to the fact that the Section seminar competed with the Real Estate Practices CLE. He suggested that the Section better coordinate efforts with the Bar for the 2008 program. Mr. Brooker further stated that the seminar was well received.

Next was discussion on the Section newsletter. Ms. Smith announced that the last Section newsletter was distributed in February of 2006 and encouraged Council members to submit articles before the February 16 deadline.

The next item was discussion on the 2007 NC/SC Tax Sections Workshop. Mr. Brooker reported that the event was scheduled for May 25–27, at the Crowne Plaza Resort in Hilton Head. He welcomed input on potential speakers and topics and encouraged Council participation.

There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned.
