Solo and Small Firm Section Council Minutes
July 20, 2005
The Solo and Small Firm Section Council met on July 20, 2005, via conference call. Members present were: William E. Booth III, Jane H. Downey, Ronald C. Scott and James E. Smith Jr. Representing the Bar staff was Tara Smith.
Chairperson Downey called the meeting to order.
In the first item of business, it was reported that the Section had elected to conduct a seminar during the 2006 Convention on the afternoon of Friday, January 27. The Council suggested the following potential speaker and topics:
Amicus software program, Steve Best
Expanding your practice
How to use Case.net in your practice
How to utilize technology and how it can be effective in your practice
The Federal District Court’s new electronic filing system, Larry Propes
It was noted that Ms. Downey was to contact Mr. Propes at the U.S. District Court in Columbia. She was to research the possibility of Mr. Propes conducting a hands-on training course during the seminar.
In the next item of business, Ms. Downey expressed her desire to distribute a Section newsletter. Ms. Smith was to solicit articles from the membership, compile all submissions, and forward them to Ms. Downey for review.
Next, it was suggested that the Section host quarterly lunch and learn programs or dinner seminars for its members. Ms. Smith was to contact Terry Burnett in CLE to discuss the ideas further.
Finally, there was discussion of the FY2005-06 Section goals. The following goals were approved:
Sponsor or co-sponsor quarterly lunch and learns and/or seminars.
Publish a Section newsletter.
Provide “How-To” blurbs and other information helpful to solos and small firms for E-Blast.
Increase Solo and Small Firm Section membership.
Promote and utilize the online Lawyer-to-Lawyer Directory.
There being no further business to discuss, the meeting was adjourned.
