Minutes June 2008

The Family Law Section Council met this date via conference call. Participating members included Lisa Emery, Pat Forbis, Martha Hamel, Jimmy Long, Bett Myrick, Randy Phipps and Vance Stricklin. Representing Bar staff was Tara Smith.  

Ms. Hamel called the meeting to order.  

The first item of business was approval of the minutes from the May 15, 2008, meeting. Ms. Forbis moved to approval the minutes. Mr. Stricklin seconded the motion, and it was approved.

The next item of business was discussion on the Financial Declaration form. The Council's recommendations for additional revisions to the financial declaration form were submitted to the SC Supreme Court. Ms. Smith announced that court administration had responded and noted that they had received several other suggested from various lawyers and that suggestions were sent to the Family Court Judges Advisory Committee for consideration. It was suggested that the Council contact the Committee re its interest in assisting with additional changes. Ms. Hamel and Ms. Emery were to approach Judge Jay Vinson.

In the next item, Ms. Smith reviewed potential restaurants and transportation options for the Council/Faculty dinner in conjunction with the Family Law Intensive. After discussion, the Council agreed that the dinner be held at MarketPlace. Transportation was $500 too high. Suggested to research further. Ms. Smith to report her findings to the Council at the next business meeting.

Next was discussion on the 2009 Bar Convention. Ms. Hamel reviewed potential restaurants to host the council dinner and asked input from the Council. After discussion, the Council agreed to host at Collector's Café. Noted only 3 blocks away from hotel so no transportation was needed. She was to contact Sandy Parise and professor. Ms. Hamel was to further research lunch. She provided a brief overview of the seminar agenda. It was as follows:

SC Families in Transition Pilot project for Divorce Education.

Mr. Stricklin and Melissa Brown were coordinating Hot Tips CLE and announced additional speakers were needed and welcomed suggestions from the Council. It was suggested to contact Jan Warner. Ms. Smith recommended contacting Terry Burnett in the CLE Division for ideas.

Ms. Forbis announced that she had contacted YLD President, Tiffany Spann-Wilder re Council's participation for the Families Forever project. She announced that no financial obligation, want assistance soliciting speakers. Pat would continue working with Children's Law Center and Division on GAL training.
It was reported that the next meeting was scheduled for August 21, 2008, at the Bar building.
