August 2007 Minutes

August 16, 2007

The Family Law Section Council met this date.  Participating members included Melissa J. Emery, Patricia L. Forbis, Martha L. Hamel, W. Randall Phipps, Vicki J. Snelgrove and C. Vance Stricklin.  Participating via conference call were Melissa F. Brown, Catherine E. Fairey and Elizabeth Myrick.  Representing the Bar staff were Sally Davis, Matt Riley and Tara Smith.

Chairperson Snelgrove called the meeting to order.

The first item of business was approval of the minutes from the June 21, 2007, meeting. Ms. Brown moved approval of the minutes.  Ms. Emery seconded the motion, and it was approved.

The next item of business was discussion on the 2008 Family Law Intensive Workshop.  Ms. Davis stated that there was a conflict with the proposed contract at the Asheville Renaissance for November 7 & 8 and suggested that the Council consider hosting the event at the Grove Park Inn. She recommended rescheduling the date to November 21 & 22 to avoid various football game schedules.  Ms. Snelgrove welcomed feedback on the seminar format, potential speakers and topics from the Council.  After discussion, it was the consensus of the Council to begin the program at 1:00 p.m. on Friday and continue all day on Saturday.  Ms. Davis was to coordinate directly with the hotel.  Ms. Myrick and Ms. Brown suggested that the seminar focus on marketing for firms, and recommended inviting Mark Powers with Atticus.  Ms. Davis was to verify his availability. 

Ms. Emery moved that the 2008 Family Law Section be held at the Grove Park Inn in Asheville, NC on November 21 & 22. The motion was seconded, and it was approved.

Next was discussion on the 2008 Bar Convention.  It was reported that the Section CLE was scheduled for Friday, January 25, 2:15 â€" 5:30 p.m.  Ms. Snelgrove briefly reviewed the tentative agenda and noted that she would like to invite Professor Timothy Bouch to fill the remaining 30 minutes. After discussion, the agenda was revised as follows:

Ms. Snelgrove was to confirm speakers and submit the revised agenda to Mr. Riley. The Council expressed interest in using electronic controls for the Hearns’ presentation so that the audience could answer questions.  Mr. Riley asked that the questions be submitted in advance.

Ms. Myrick was to coordinate the Friday Council luncheon at T-Bonz and the Friday night faculty dinner at Cypress Lowcountry Grille.  Ms. Brown volunteered to assist.

Next was discussion on the proposed amendments to Rule 14 of the SC Rules of Family Court and the new proposed financial declaration form.  Ms. Snelgrove stated that the Section was to submit a request in support of the amendments to the Board of Governors for consideration.  Mr. Stricklin noted that the proposed amendments to Rule 14 had passed the legislature and therefore would not need approval from the Board.  Ms. Smith was to submit the proposed financial declaration form to the Board of Governors and the House of Delegates for consideration.

Next was discussion on whether the Council would proceed with its proposed amendments to Rule 21 of the SC Family Court Rules.  Mr. Phipps moved that the Council not proceed with the proposed amendments to Rule 21.  Ms. Forbis seconded the motion, and it was approved.

Next was discussion on the Section co-sponsoring the Hot Tips from the Coolest Domestic Law Practitioners, seminar.  Ms. Snelgrove queried whether the Council had an interest in sponsoring a refreshment break at the seminar.  Ms. Smith reported that expenses for the morning and afternoon breaks were approximately $1,300.00. After discussion, Mr. Stricklin moved that the Section sponsor a refreshment break at the Hot Tips from the Coolest Domestic Law Practitioners, seminar not to exceed $1,500, the motion was seconded, and it was approved.

Ms. Snelgrove announced that the SC Bar sponsored a daily radio segment on WOIC 1230 AM for introducing legal topics of public interest. She noted that volunteers were needed to sponsor a week and asked if the Council was interested. The Council agreed to host a week on family law issues.  Ms. Smith was to relay the Council’s interest to Mary Nash in the Communications Division.

It was announced that the next Council meeting was scheduled for September 20, 2007, at the Bar building.
