Insurance

  • Information about insurance (medical, dental, liability and disability) for SC Bar members is here or see Page 23 of the 2005-2006 South Carolina Bar Lawyers Desk Book for a complete list of insurers approved by the Bar (You may also obtain insurance from a company of your own choosing.)
  • Health Insurance ideas:
    • Bar Group Medical Plan
    • Change coverage to spouse
    • Check COBRA rates
    • ABA plans, if you are a member, but check COBRA first
    • National Association of Self-Employed (www.nase.org) plan
    • Independent insurance agents
    • Web sites: www.insure.com, etc.
    • Ask other lawyers who they use

  • Make sure you have adequate hazard insurance coverage for the contents of your new office, including any necessary coverage for business interruption and destruction of papers and files.  Also check on liability coverage for accidents that may occur in your office, and consider the purchase of disability coverage.
  • Obtain malpractice coverage. (While not mandatory in South Carolina, it is a good idea!)
  • Determine whether you will need worker's compensation insurance and obtain it.

  • For more information on choosing insurance, see Legal Malpractice: The Law Office Guide to Purchasing Legal Malpractice Insurance by Ronald E. Mallen; The Lawyer’s Guide to Insurance by Ben G.
