About the Seminar
Non-profit organizations of every size and mission are being buffeted by the downtown in the economy. The endowments of many have sustained major losses and they are seeking to gain access to formerly restricted funds.  Many are trying to restructure their operations or change their missions. Renewed attention is also being paid to non-profit investment decisions in the steep market falloff and after the disclosure of the Madoff fraud. Also, the first compliance deadline for new Form 990 with its governance questions has sowed substantial confusion in the non-profit community.  This program will provide you with a broad update on major issues confronting non-profit entities in a down economy and a discussion of current regulatory concerns.

About the Speakers
Michael Lehmann is a partner in the New York office of Manatt, Phelps & Phillips, LLP, where he specializes in tax issues relating to tax-exempt organizations and in the tax treatment of cross-border transactions.  In the tax-exempt organizations field he regularly advises a large number of tax-exempt organizations, including hospitals and other health care providers, research organizations, low-income housing developers, trade associations, private foundations and arts organizations.  He advises clients on obtaining and maintaining tax-exempt status, managed care, executive compensation, reorganizations and joint ventures, acquisitions, unrelated business income planning and foundation excise taxes.  Mr. Lehmann received his A.B., magna cum laude, from Brown University, his J.D. from Columbia Law School, and his LL.M. from New York University School of Law.

Michele A. W. McKinnon is a partner in the Richmond, Virginia office of McGuireWoods, LLP, considered one of the leading authorities in Virginia in tax-exempt organizations and charitable giving. She has more than 20 years experience representing public charities, major colleges and universities, supporting organizations, large private foundations, and charitable trusts.  She is a Fellow in the American College of Trusts and Estates Counsel and currently serves as its Virginia State Chair, and a member of the Fiduciary Income Tax Committee of the ABA Tax Section. She is a former chair of the Trusts and Estates Section of the Virginia State Bar.  Ms. McKinnon received her B.A. from the University of Virginia , her J.D., magna cum laude, from the University of Richmond School of Law, and her L.L.M. in taxation form the College of William & Mary Marshall-Wythe School of Law.
