What You Will Learn About the Seminar This intensive two-day training focuses on developing a team of interdisciplinary professionals to work with family conflict and provide support to clients in reaching a fair and equitable settlement. However, all models of practice will be discussed, including lawyer only and mediator facilitated settlements. We will begin with an overview of the role and responsibility of each professional in the team, including the requisite paradigm shifts necessary for each profession to ensure the successful resolution of family conflict. We will discuss the decision-making that goes into how to best meet the family’s needs within their financial circumstances. Participants will learn about the role of each professional in collaborative practice; how the professions interact and develop an effective team and the importance of a mutual goal to facilitate success. There is a mixture of plenary sessions and breakouts for participants to have an opportunity to focus on skills unique to their specialty, and to learn what other professions expect from them. Trainers utilize a mix of lectures, power point, interactive exercises, demonstrations and role play to improve participants’ knowledge and skills in collaborative practice. The course focuses on utilizing a team of professionals to transform family law disputes into a collaborative process. Participants will learn how Collaborative Family Practice integrates the roles and function of the interdisciplinary team to enhance resolution of family conflict. This is a “how to” course which concentrates on the process, the application of the process and specific strategies and techniques necessary to reach a fair and equitable settlement. This course is essential to ensure that collaborative professionals work together to utilize cooperative strategies rather than adversarial techniques and litigation to resolve family disputes. Lectures provide an understanding of how each professional employs his or her knowledge and skill to support the client’s participation in the process. Demonstrations illustrate step-by-step progress through the process based on real case examples. Role play offers participants an opportunity to practice their respective professional skills, as well as experience what it may “feel” like to be a client in the process. Participants will receive information on the importance of participation in Practice Organizational Development (POD) to ensure that education and instruction will continue following training.
