The Military & Veterans’ Law Section Council met this date at the Bar building. Participating members included Kenny H. Dojaquez, Dorothy H. Edgerton, LTC. K. Scott Katrosh, MAJ. Thomas A. McDermott, LTC. Timothy W. Murphy, Hon. O. Eugene Powell, Jr. and John Wall. Invited guest included, CPT. Tyler Fleck. Michael W. Harrington participated via conference call. Representing Bar staff was Tara G. Caine.
MAJ. Thomas A. McDermott called the meeting to order.
The first item of business was approval of the minutes from the August 27, 2013, meeting. Ms. Edgerton moved approval of the minutes. LTC. Katrosh seconded the motion, and it was approved.
It was reported that the Section fund balance as of January 31, 2014, was $5,036.75.
The next item was discussion on the 2015 fall seminar. Ms. Caine provided potential dates in September and October to host the CLE at the Bar Conference Center. It was suggested to check the USC football schedule before making a final decision. MAJ. McDermott and Ms. Edgerton agreed to coordinate.
Next was discussion on the Bar Convention. MAJ. McDermott reported that the seminar was well received and that there were 30 plus members in attendance. He noted that several individuals had approached him after the CLE regarding their interest in joining the Section. MAJ. McDermott and LTC. Katrosh were to follow-up with them. Ms. Caine was to mail them a copy of the Section brochure.
Ms. Caine announced that the 2015 Bar Convention was scheduled for January 22-25 in Columbia. MAJ. McDermott volunteered to coordinate the seminar and suggested to host on Saturday morning. He welcomed input on potential speakers and topics. Mr. Dojaquez agreed to speak on VA Law & Benefits. Mr. Wall suggested Dan Johnson speak on Veterans Second Amendment Protection Act. He was to contact him regarding his interest.
Next, Ms. Edgerton provided an update on the Veterans Legal Clinics. She announced that SC Appleseed Legal Justice Center and the Veterans Justice Outreach Program was schedule to host several pro-bono veterans’ legal clinics throughout the state. Volunteers were needed to assist in various areas. Ms. Caine had distributed information through the Section listserv. Additional information was forthcoming.
Discussion regarding the SCRA seminar was tabled until the next Council meeting.
Next, Mr. Harrington provided an update on the proposed socials with the law schools. He stated that he had been in contact with a representative from the Charleston School of Law regarding its interest. Ms. Caine reminded the Council that up to $400 was allotted toward the socials. She asked that the coordinators forward her the information once the events were finalized so she would distribute to the membership. Mr. Wall announced that USC Student Bar Association and the Service Members & Veterans in Law were sponsoring a golf tournament on March 21st at Northwoods Golf Club in Columbia. All proceeds were to benefit Hidden Wounds. He also noted that the Association was to host its annual Veterans Day happy hour and Pro Bono Award recognition in November. He was to forward Ms. Caine the information to distribute through the Section listserv and post on the Bar website.
Ms. Caine reported that a list of pre-filed bills as well as legislation being monitored from last session was distributed to the Section. LTC. Katrosh expressed concern with the Military Income Tax Deductions, H. 3112. After discussion, Ms. Caine stated she would continue to provide updates on legislative issues related to the Section.
In closing, the Council expressed interest in creating a membership for law students within the Section. Ms. Caine was to further research and report her findings at the next Council meeting.
