Minutes April 2014

The Government Law Section Council met this date via conference call. Participating members included W. Lawrence Brown, Michael W. Burns, Lisa R. Claxton, Nancy Shealy, R. Brent Thompkins, Timothy C. Winslow and Kimberly N. Wunder. Representing Bar staff was Tara Caine.

The meeting was called to order.

The first item of business was approval of the minutes from the August 29, 2013, meeting. Ms. Wunder moved approval of the minutes. Ms. Shealy seconded the motion, and it was approved.

Next, Ms. Caine announced that the FY2014-2016 Council roster was distributed as information. She noted that Council members served a two-year term.

In the next item of business was discussion on the Bar Convention. Ms. Caine stated that the evaluation summaries were distributed to the Council. Mr. Burns stated that the seminar was well attended and had a broad range of topics that were of interest to the attendees. Ms. Caine announced that the 2015 Convention was scheduled for January 22nd – 25th in Columbia. Mr. Brown was to serve as the course planner. He welcomed recommendations for potential speakers and topics. After discussion, the following topics were suggested: Environmental Issues Related to Purchasing Property, Economic Development, Bond-Related Issues, etc. Ms. Caine was to solicit for additional recommendations through the Section listserv. The Council expressed interest in hosting the CLE on Friday morning. Ms. Caine was to relay the Council’s decision to the CLE Division.

Next was discussion on the Section Midyear Meeting. It was reported that the program was scheduled for Friday, June 20th at the Bar Conference Center. Mr. Burns and Mr. Smith were coordinating the event. Mr. Burns stated that he had submitted the agenda and seminar description to the CLE Division. Registration materials were forthcoming.

Ms. Caine announced that she had not received any submissions for the annual summary. She would continue to send updates through the Section listserv as needed.

In closing was discussion on legislative issues. A list of pre-filed bills as well as legislation being monitored by the Bar was distributed to the Council in January. Ms. Caine was to forward any additional updates.
