Minutes June 2014

Call to Order, Roll Call and Welcome
Section Chair Mr. Sowell called the meeting to order and welcomed those participating.

Approval of Prior Minutes
The Minutes of the May 30, 2014 meeting were adopted by acclamation.

Old Business
Mr. Sowell reported on behalf of Mr. Crowe that the Council’s request to the Ethics Advisory Committee concerning the payment of mediators would be discussed at its meeting to be held later that day. The Committee was to respond within approximately sixty days. Ms. Coker said that she would be at the meeting and would respond to any questions that arose. Mr. Sowell said he would be available by telephone if needed. The discussion of a proposed rule change concerning this issue was tabled until September.

Mr. Sowell confirmed with Ms. Coker that the planning for the Young Lawyers Guide to Dispute Resolution training was scheduled for June 26, 2014, at 9:00 a.m. Ms. Coker also confirmed that the training would be held on August 28, 2014, from 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. As an incentive to attend, tickets to the Carolina-Texas A&M football game would be raffled that day.

Ms. Coker reported that the Membership Services Division of the Bar would be responsible for communicating information to the law school regarding the Law Student Affiliate Division. Ms. Coker would report Membership Services’ plans to the Council.

Mr. Keefer updated the Council members on his planning for the 2015 Bar Convention. He mentioned that all the filings had been met for Thursday afternoon of the opening. Speakers would include Mr. Cooke, Ms. HaLevi, Mr. Manley, the Hon. Lisa Kinon and a lawyer from North Carolina. Marketing efforts would be directly targeted toward the family law section and would include Mr. Keefer’s contacting the heads of the family court liaison groups throughout the state to encourage participation.

New Business
The Section Council received a letter from the Upstate Mediation Center with questions that involved service of a warrant at one mediation and service of a contempt motion at another. Mr. Sowell asked Mr. Manley, Ms. HaLevi and Mr. Keefer to serve on an ad hoc committee to study the issues. Ms. HaLevi would chair the committee, and Mr. Sowell would provide assistance if needed.

Next Meeting
Mr. Sowell scheduled the next conference call meeting for August 1, 2014, at 9:00 a.m.
