Minutes March 2012

The Construction Law Section Council met this date via conference call. Participating members included Bright Ariail, Keven Kenison, Wesley Peel, Tracy Vann and Ted Vick. Representing Bar staff was Tara G. Smith.

Chairperson Ariail called the meeting to order.

The first item of business was approval of the minutes from the August 9, 2011, meeting. Mr. Vick moved approval of the minutes. Mr. Kenison seconded the motion, and it was approved.

The next item of business was discussion on the Fall Section CLE scheduled for September 27 & 28 at the Westin Poinsett in Greenville. Ms. Ariail provided a brief overview of the agenda. It was noted that the Council/faculty dinner was scheduled for Thursday from 5:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. with the reception to follow ending at 9:00 p.m. The Council expressed interest in seeking sponsors/exhibitors for the event. Ms. Smith was to relay the Council’s decision to the CLE Division.

Next, Mr. Vick provided an update on the Construction Law Deskbook. He noted that the publication would consist of up to 15 chapters with approximately 430 pages. He stated that an additional editor was needed and invited volunteers. After discussion, Matt Stabler was recommended to serve as an editor. Mr. Vick briefly reviewed the timeline:

March 5, authors to submit draft to editors
May 1, editors to submit revisions back to authors
June 18, authors to submit final copy to Ms. Ariail and Mr. Vick
July 2, final manuscript to be submitted to the CLE Division

It was the consensus of the Council that the publication be launched during the 2013 Bar Convention. Information regarding its release would be included in the Section newsletter, Eblast, Bar Website and various other outlets.

Next was discussion on the 2013 NC/SC Joint Conference. It was noted that the event was scheduled for September 27-29 at Grove Park Inn in Asheville, NC. Ms. Ariail welcomed a volunteer to serve as the course planner. Ms. Vann and Mr. Kenison agreed to coordinate. Ms. Smith was to forward their contact information to the NC Bar.

Next, Ms. Smith provided an update on the 2012 Section Membership Directory. She reminded the Council that Bar members were to confirm/update their contact information through the Court’s AIS. She stated that the Court did not require members to include their fax numbers. Ms. Smith queried whether to postpone the release of the directory until sufficient information was available. It was the consensus of the Council to delay the release of the directory.

In closing was discussion on the Construction CPM Scheduling program. Mr. Vick stated that he received an email regarding the Section’s interest in conducting the program. He noted that it was an advanced one-day seminar. He welcomed feedback from the Council. After discussion, it was suggested that the seminar be condensed to a one hour presentation. Mr. Vick was to forward a copy of the brochure and additional information to the Council. Further discussion was tabled until the next Council meeting.

There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned.
