The Construction Law Section Council met this date via conference call. Participating members included Joshua D. Spencer, Tracy T. Vann, C. Ted Vick, Jr. and James E. Weatherholtz. Representing Bar staff was Tara G. Smith.
Chairperson Weatherholtz called the meeting to order.
The first item of business was approval of the minutes from the March 1, 2012, meeting. Mr. Vick moved approval of the minutes. Ms. Vann seconded the motion, and it was approved.
The next item of business was discussion on the 2013 Bar Convention scheduled for January 24-27, at the Myrtle Beach Marriott Resort & Spa. Mr. Weatherholtz announced that the Section CLE was scheduled for Friday, January 25, from 2:30 p.m. until 5:45 p.m. He provided a brief overview of the seminar agenda.
Next, Mr. Vick provided an update on the Section Deskbook. He stated that the bankruptcy and environmental law chapters had not been submitted. If not received, the chapters would be omitted from the publication. Mr. Vick announced that the final manuscript would be submitted to the CLE Division by October 1st.
Next, Ms. Smith announced that the fall Section seminar was scheduled for September 27th & 28th at the Westin Poinsett in Greenville. A dinner was scheduled for 5:30 p.m. for the Council and faculty, with a reception to follow. She was to distribute invitations.
It was reported that the 2013 NC/SC Joint Conference was scheduled for September 27-29 at the Grove Park Inn in Asheville, N.C. Ms. Vann and Mr. Kenison were to serve as coordinators.
Next was discussion on the 2015 NC/SC Joint Conference. Ms. Smith stated that she had been approached by a representative from Wild Dunes regarding the Section’s interest in hosting its conference at Wild Dunes. Further discussion was tabled until the next Council meeting.
Ms. Smith stated that the annual report was to be distributed to the Section members in December/January. Mr. Kenison was to coordinate.
Next was discussion on the Section goals for the 2012-2013 Bar year. Ms. Smith briefly reviewed the FY2011-2012 goals. After discussion, the following goals were approved:
• Produce and distribute an annual summary/year-end review to members through the Section listserv and post on the Bar Website. Encourage Section members to submit articles to be published in the SC Lawyer and/or other Bar publications.
• Host a Construction Law Section seminar in the fall of 2012.
• Update and distribute the South Carolina Bar Construction Law Section Directory in 2013.
• Coordinate a joint conference with the North Carolina Construction Law Section in 2013.
• Publish a Construction Law Deskbook to be released in 2013.
In closing was discussion on the Construction CPM Scheduling program. Mr. Vick reminded the Council that he had received an email from the Virginia CLE Division regarding the Section’s interest in sponsoring the one-day advanced seminar. He welcomed feedback from the Council. After discussion, it was the consensus of the Council that the Section would market the seminar through the Section listserv if the program was held in South Carolina but would not support financially. Ms. Smith was to relay the Council’s decision to the Division.
