Important notice about your information in the Lawyers Desk Book
Production of the 2014-15 Lawyers Desk Book is underway, and address changes must be made by June 1 to be reflected in the new edition. All changes in contact information are handled by the
S.C. Attorney Information System (AIS) exclusively, and you must log on to AIS to update your information; for assistance, call 1-855-235-2500. Complete contact information will be published for all Bar members, to include name, organization, mailing address, phone number and e-mail address.

If you have not entered your fax number in AIS, the Bar does not have it on file. While AIS does not require fax numbers, you must enter one if you would like it to appear in the Lawyers Desk Book. To ensure your zip code matches the address published, please do not enter two addresses (P.O. Box and Street) in a single address field. Please review your information carefully, as it will be published as entered in AIS.

Please note: a CD version of the Lawyers Desk Book is available to members. If you would like to opt out of the print version and receive your complimentary copy of the 2014-15 Lawyers Desk Book on CD, e-mail khultgren@scbar.org

Sign up for the Lawyer-to-Lawyer Directory
The deadline to sign up to be listed in the 2014 Lawyer-to-Lawyer Directory is June 1. The directory is a list of lawyers who have experience in specific areas of the law and is available on the Bar’s website. Participating lawyers provide brief telephone consultations (up to 10 minutes) at no charge to other Bar members on specific areas of law. The directory is meant to encourage and facilitate appropriate lawyer-to-lawyer consultations, referrals and associations. It is not intended as a referral guide for the public.

To participate, complete the electronic form at
www.scbar.org/L2L and e-mail to scbar-info@scbar.org. Participants must have three or more years of practice in the areas they select. Those listed in prior years will continue to appear in the directory unless the Bar is otherwise notified.

PMAP Tech Tip
Dropbox is one of the most popular cloud file storage sites. To make sure files you need are available offline (when you don’t have an Internet connection), simply “favorite” the files by opening them in Dropbox and clicking the star icon. Read these
clear, step-by-step instructions. South Carolina has not issued an ethics opinion on cloud storage. If you would like to see what other states have said about this issue, review this chart. Contact PMAP for free assistance with your law practice at pmap@scbar.org.

Need a vacation?
Travel to London with the Senior Lawyers Division! Stay at a first-class hotel in Kensington, and visit Old Bailey, the Inns of Court and more. Sightsee, shop and pub hop your way through the historical capital of England; local guides are provided, but plenty of time is available to explore on your own. The trip is open to all Bar members and a companion. Thirty travelers can be accommodated, and reservations are first-come, first served basis. The deadline to sign up is May 30. Contact Nancy Layman at nancy.layman@att.net or (803) 776-6999 with questions.

Find inspiration in a Bar Foundation grantee
Stories of success always inspire. For the Bar Foundation, stories like these would not exist without the hard work of its 18 grantees and the support of the legal profession. Visit the
Bar Foundation’s website to take a look back at stories from some of the thousands of South Carolinians who were helped by grantees in 2013.

Advance Sheet update
May 7, 2014
Because the S.C. Court of Appeals found the trial court’s refusal to provide Manning a full evidentiary hearing was harmless error, and because the trial court did not abuse its discretion in charging the jury under the common law Castle Doctrine instead of the Protection of Persons and Property Act, the court affirmed the decision of the trial court.
State v. Manning, Op. No. 5228 (S.C. Ct. App. filed May 7, 2014) (Shearouse Adv. Sh. No. 18 at 16), is available
online.
