House of Delegates election results
Congratulations to these members who were recently elected to the House of Delegates for the 2014-2015 Bar year. Terms will begin July 1, 2014.

You're invited
A reception honoring William C. Hubbard, the first S.C. lawyer elected to serve as president of the American Bar Association, will be held in Mr. Hubbard's hometown of Florence on Thursday, April 17, at Victor's Bistro (126 W. Evans St., in the Hotel Florence) from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. This event is sponsored by the Florence County Bar Association, the S.C. Bar, the Judicial Division of the ABA, and numerous lawyers and firms in the Pee Dee area.

JQC phone interviews regarding judicial candidates
The Judicial Qualifications Committee (JQC) began its calls to the bench and bar on March 17. The information compiled by JQC is not attributed to those interviewed and is used to determine a collective opinion of the candidate. JQC policies provide that committee members complete at least 30 calls per candidate. Participation from Bar members who have experience with any of the candidates is highly encouraged and valued. You may be asked about multiple candidates in order to avoid duplicate calls. Thank you for your continued cooperation and support.

Advance Sheet update
March 19, 2014
In this dispute concerning the transfer of financial assets, the decedent directed his bank to transfer assets in his investment account into another account for his spouse but died before all of the assets were credited to the spouse’s account. On writ of certiorari, the S.C. Supreme Court reversed the decision of the Court of Appeals and held the disputed assets properly belonged to the wife and, thus, were not includible in the decedent’s estate.
In the Matter of the Estate of Rider, Op. No. 27367 (S.C. Sup. Ct. filed March 19, 2014) (Shearouse Adv. Sh. No. 11 at 21), is available
online

In this ineffective assistance of counsel case, the Court held the Court of Appeals erred in finding Walker was not prejudiced by his trial counsel’s failure to interview a potential alibi witness. Accordingly, the Court reversed the decision of the Court of Appeals and affirmed the post-conviction relief court’s grant of relief.
