Welcome to the South Carolina Bar's E-Blast!
December 8, 2011
E-Blast highlights upcoming activities, legal information and links to the Bar's website at www.scbar.org.
The South Carolina Bar is dedicated to advancing justice, professionalism and understanding of the law.
Don't forget about the Professional Liability Insurance section of your License Fee Statements!
2012 License Fee Statements are due Jan. 1, 2012. Please make sure to complete the new Professional Liability Insurance section of your statement. The Bar intends to use this information solely for statistical purposes to learn more about the percentage of insured lawyers admitted to practice in South Carolina. The Bar does not plan to tabulate and retain the insurance information by identity of the lawyer or law firm. While certain categories of lawyers (e.g. judicial law clerks, solicitors, public defenders, S.C. Attorney General’s office and U.S. Attorney’s office lawyers) will be excluded from the statistical calculations, it will be helpful if all lawyers complete this section. License Fee Statements submitted without this information may skew the statistical analysis.
2012-13 Leadership Academy application period now open!
The Bar is now accepting applications for the 2012-13 Leadership Academy. This fourth installment of the Academy will focus on the following topics: lawyers in public service, professionalism, career development, work-life balance, lawyers and the judiciary, pro bono and community service, and service to the Bar. Sessions will take place on the following dates: Jan. 21-22 (Columbia, at the end of the S.C. Bar Convention); Feb. 23, (Columbia), March 23 (Greenville), April 20 (Charleston) and May 3 (Columbia, Annual Meeting). The purpose of the Leadership Academy is to enhance the professional growth and leadership skills development of selected members to prepare them to make greater contributions to the legal profession and to the community. Advance Sheet update
December 7, 2011
The petitioner sought review of the post-conviction relief (PCR) court's denial of his request for belated review of his direct appeal issue and reversal of his murder conviction, asserting that the trial court erred in denying his motion for a directed verdict based upon the insufficiency of the evidence. The S.C. Court of Appeals reversed the PCR court's denial of the petitioner's request for a belated review, finding that there was no probative evidence that the petitioner knowingly waived his right to direct appeal or that trial counsel made certain the petitioner was fully aware of his right to appeal following the trial. However, after review of his direct appeal issue, the court affirmed the petitioner's conviction for murder.
