Students gear up for Middle School Mock Trial regional competitions

October 25, 2011

COLUMBIA, S.C. (Oct. 24, 2011) — Thirty-eight middle schools from across the state will compete in the S.C. Bar Regional Middle School Mock Trial Competitions on Saturday, Nov. 5. Students will present the prosecution and defendant sides of a fictitious case before a panel of local volunteer lawyers and judges. Additionally, students will fill the roles of attorneys, witnesses, bailiffs and timekeepers. Each team will be judged on its presentation skills, rather than the legal merits of the case.

Participating schools and competition locations are as follows:

Midlands region, Marc H. Westbrook Lexington County Judicial Center, 205 E. Main St., Lexington: Blythewood, Center for Accelerated Preparation, Crayton, Dent, Dutch Fork, E.L. Wright, Hammond, Hand, Heathwood Hall Episcopal, Irmo, Lexington, Longleaf, Schofield, St. Andrews, St. Joseph and W.A. Perry.

Coastal region, Conway Courthouse, 1301 Second Ave., Conway: Black Water, Forestbrook, Hanahan, Hemingway, Johnsonville, Marrington, Myrtle Beach, N. Myrtle Beach, Ocean Bay, Palmetto, St. Anne Catholic, St. Anthony Catholic, St. James, Westview, Whittemore and Williams.

This year’s fictitious criminal case is State of South Carolina v. Drew DeLaney. DeLaney, a high school track coach, was charged with involuntary manslaughter following the death of one of the team’s top runners, who collapsed after a strenuous practice on one of the hottest days of the year. The prosecution and defense have different explanations for the cause of death.

A total of 10 teams from the three different regions will advance to the state competition Dec. 9-10 at the Marc H. Westbrook Lexington County Judicial Center located at 205 E. Main St. in Lexington.

The Mock Trial program is sponsored by the S.C. Bar’s Law Related Education (LRE) Division, which was developed in 1976 to improve the ability of teachers to instruct law related education.

The Mock Trial program is made possible through an IOLTA grant from the S.C. Bar Foundation and the S.C. Bar.

The S.C. Bar, which has a membership of more than 13,500 lawyers, is dedicated to advancing justice, professionalism and understanding of the law.
