Lonnie B. Nelson Elementary ACE program places first in Project Citizen Showcase

COLUMBIA (April 23, 2012) – Students from Lonnie B. Nelson Elementary School's ACE Program have won the S.C. Bar Law Related Education (LRE) Middle School Project Citizen Showcase, marking the third time the school has won.

The project, titled "Eat Neat, and Get on Your Feet," addressed the need for more physical activity during the school week and the importance of educating students about how to live a healthy lifestyle with lasting effects.

Participating students included Michaya Asbury, Andy Bowers, Joshua Curry, Koty Davis, Zharia Fuller, Maurice Holloway, Noah Hook, Amber Isler, Nia Jackson, Oliva Landis, Kennedy Lawrence, Tyler McCormack, Jocelyn McTier, Zoey Nixon, Alejandra Ramirez, Thomas Robertson, Nathaniel Shiver, Nick Singleton, Garrison Thomas and Ferrin Threatt. The lead teacher was Courtney Long.

Project Citizen encourages students to research a public policy they believe should be revised or created. By doing so, they learn what it means to be effective citizens and are inspired to make changes in their communities. As a result of participation in the program, students are more likely to be active, educated and engaged citizens. Each portfolio entered in the showcase includes an identified problem, three proposed alternative polices, a class policy and an action plan. The number of portfolios is narrowed down at in-school competitions held during regular class time at each competing school.

Project Citizen can be taught in all subjects in upper elementary through grade 12 to include community groups and after school programs.
