Deadline to update information in Lawyers Desk Book is June 1
Production of the 2014-15 Lawyers Desk Book is underway, and address changes must be made by June 1 to be reflected in the new edition. All changes in contact information are handled exclusively by the S.C. Attorney Information System (AIS), and you must log on to AIS to update your information. Complete contact information will be published for all Bar members, to include name, organization, mailing address, phone number and e-mail address.
If you have not entered your fax number in AIS, the Bar does not have it on file. While AIS does not require fax numbers, you must enter one if you would like it to appear in the Lawyers Desk Book. To ensure your zip code matches the address published, please do not enter two addresses (P.O. Box and Street) in a single address field. Please review your information carefully, as it will be published as entered in AIS.
Please note: an electronic version of the Lawyers Desk Book is available to members. If you would like to opt out of the print version, e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org.
Sign up for the Lawyer-to-Lawyer Directory
The deadline to sign up to be listed in the 2014 Lawyer-to-Lawyer Directory is June 1. The directory is a list of lawyers who have experience in specific areas of the law and is available on the Bar’s website. Participating lawyers provide brief telephone consultations (up to 10 minutes) at no charge to other Bar members on specific areas of law. The directory is meant to encourage and facilitate appropriate lawyer-to-lawyer consultations, referrals and associations. It is not intended as a referral guide for the public. To participate, complete the electronic form at www.scbar.org/L2L and e-mail to email@example.com. Participants must have three or more years of practice in the areas they select. Those listed in prior years will continue to appear in the directory unless the Bar is otherwise notified.
The Council of the S.C. Bar Solo & Small Firm Section is seeking nominations for the Solo & Small Firm Section Award. The award honors a sole practitioner, small law firm (10 or fewer attorneys) or single lawyer in a small firm that has demonstrated service to the community or fellow lawyers. The inaugural award will be presented at the 2014 Solo & Small Firm Conference on Sept. 19 in Greenville. Nominees must be licensed in South Carolina and be members of the S.C. Bar in good standing. If you would like to self-nominate or nominate another attorney who is deserving of this honor, complete this form.
MHTD seeking recommendations for 2015
Memory Hold the Door (MHTD) honors deceased lawyers and judges who provided distinguished service to the public and the Bar. The MHTD Committee is seeking recommendations for the 2015 honorees, who will be acknowledged in conjunction with the annual Bar Convention. Individuals must have been in good standing with the S.C. Bar and passed away before Aug. 22, 2013. Send letters of recommendation to Tara Caine at firstname.lastname@example.org by June 2. Find more information and view the list of previous honorees online.
New Ethics Advisory Opinion
The Ethics Advisory Committee has issued a new opinion. The text of all opinions is available online.
14-02 A lawyer may not ethically discharge his duties as a prosecutor in a municipality that has a policy of “no dismissals and no negotiations.” Such policy prevents the lawyer from exercising prosecutorial discretion and is therefore inconsistent with the lawyer’s responsibilities under Rule 3.8(a).

The scholarships will be used to attend qualifying courses offered by the S.C. Bar CLE Division. Any member of the S.C. Bar, in good standing, is eligible for a scholarship.
