Columbia attorney Cal Watson to lead South Carolina Bar

COLUMBIA, S.C. (April 29, 2014) — Columbia attorney J. Calhoun (Cal) Watson will be installed as the 2014-15 president of the South Carolina Bar on Thursday, May 8, during the Bar’s House of Delegates meeting at the Bar Conference Center in Columbia. S.C. Supreme Court Chief Justice Jean H. Toal will administer the oath of office, and Watson will address the House on initiatives for the coming year.

Watson is managing member of the law firm of Sowell Gray Stepp & Laffitte, LLC, practicing in the areas of professional liability and commercial litigation and business dispute resolution. He is also a certified South Carolina Circuit Court mediator.

A native of Bamberg, South Carolina, Watson earned his juris doctor from the University of South Carolina School of Law after graduating summa cum laude from Wofford College. He has been selected as a South Carolina Super Lawyer for seven consecutive years and has been listed in Best Lawyers in America yearly since 2009.

Watson has served in the Bar’s House of Delegates since 1997 and has twice served on its Board of Governors. He has previously served as president-elect, treasurer and secretary of the South Carolina Bar, president of the South Carolina Bar Foundation, and president of the Young Lawyers Division of the South Carolina Bar. Watson is also past president of the John Belton O’Neall Inn of Court.

Watson serves the community as well as the legal profession. He has previously served as president of the Historic Columbia Foundation and president of the Wofford College Alumni Association.
