YLD gearing up for Community Law Week
Each year, YLD holds a number of public service projects throughout the state during the first week of May in observance of Community Law Week. YLD is gearing up for this year’s event, which will include the Cocky’s Reading Express program, Ask-A-Lawyer phone banks and web chats, a food drive, a wills clinic, beautification efforts in Anderson and a statewide blood drive. More information will be added to as it becomes available.

February Bar exam results
The results of the February 2014 Bar Examination will be posted on the Bar Admissions page of the S.C. Judicial Department website at 4 p.m. on Friday, April 25.

Opinion issued in S.C. Libertarian Party v. S.C. Election Commission
The Supreme Court, in its original jurisdiction, held the Equal Access to the Ballot Act, 2013 S.C. Act No. 61, was effective on June 25, 2013. The Court further held the Act did not require the Libertarian Party to adopt a primary nomination process in order to retain its convention method of nominating candidates.

Scam alert
Court officials are urging citizens to be aware of a new phone scam in which victims are told they have missed jury duty and must pay an outstanding fine to avoid being arrested. Read more in this article from the Aiken Standard.

Cole Scholarship applications for May CLE seminars due April 28
Applications for Ronnie M. Cole Scholarships for May seminars are due April 28. The fund provides scholarships to lawyers who need help with the cost of required CLE seminars necessary to maintain their law licenses. The scholarships will be used to attend qualifying courses offered by the S.C. Bar CLE Division. Any member of the S.C. Bar, in good standing, is eligible for a scholarship. Download the application and e-mail it to

Advance Sheet update
April 23, 2014
The S.C. Supreme Court granted a petition for writ of certiorari and reversed the decision of the Court of Appeals. The Court found the Court of Appeals erred in addressing the merits of the case because the issue of whether the petitioner was entitled to equitable relief was not preserved for review.
