Animal Law Committee pet food drive generates 1,000 pounds of food

January 21, 2014

COLUMBIA, S.C. (Jan. 21, 2014)—The S.C. Bar Animal Law Committee collected more than 1,000 pounds of dog and cat food during its first-ever Holiday Pet Food Drive in December. Other donations included cat litter, dog treats, toys, gift cards and money, which were delivered with the food to shelters and pet food pantries statewide.

Donations were given to the Aiken County Council on Aging, Operation Care/Animal Adoption League, the Charleston Animal Society, the Humane Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, Pawmetto Lifeline, Columbia Animal Services, Keep Our Pets food bank and the Community Pet Project.

"The [Animal Law] Committee would like to thank all of the volunteers and everyone who donated to the Holiday Pet Food Drive," said Kimberly Kelly, chair of the S.C. Bar Animal Law Committee. "The first year of the drive was a huge success, and we are honored to be able to help those in need throughout the state by providing food for pet owners in need and we hope to continue our efforts by making the drive an annual event.. The Committee especially thanks coordinator Katie Philips for her hard work and dedication to the project.”

The Holiday Pet Food Drive was developed by the Animal Law Committee in an effort to provide pet food to families in South Carolina dealing with financial hardship, with the hope that more families are able to keep their pets instead of having to surrender them to a municipal shelter.

The South Carolina Bar, which has a membership of more than 14,500 lawyers, is dedicated to advancing justice, professionalism and understanding of the law.
