Middle School Mock Trial state competition results
Forestbrook Middle School won the S.C. Bar Middle School Mock Trial State Competition Dec. 7, marking the school's fourth state title. Ocean Bay Middle School, which has competed at the state level four times, was named first runner-up for the second year in a row. Participating students from Forestbrook included Hannah Beam, Bailee Carter, Hailey Haddock, Ashlyn Herring, Erica Holt, Jessica Jefferds, Ashley Jones, Joey Kirkman, Nayah Lewis, Aly Loyd, Zoe McNelis, Zack Odom, Neil Pankhania, Cecia Zavala Ramos, Sydny Stegall and Sophie Stevanovich. The teacher coaches were Gretchen Almeida, Grace Burleson and Stephanie Necessary. The attorney coach was Audra McCall Byrd. The S.C. Bar
thanks all attorney volunteers as well as the staff at the Marc H. Westbrook Lexington County Judicial Center, Lexington County Summary Court, Lexington Sheriff's Department and Lexington Police Department, whose contributions helped make this competition a success. House and Senate legislation prefiled Dec. 10, 2013
Legislation to be considered during the 2014 Legislative Session was prefiled in the House of Representatives and Senate this week.
 Legislative monitoring services are provided by Bar staff to keep members abreast of proposed and pending legislation. In addition, legislative reports are regularly provided through section and committee listserves, via E-Blast and on the Bar’s website. Rule amendment
The S.C. Supreme Court has amended
Rule 404(b) of the S.C. Appellate Court Rules, effective immediately.

SCVAGAL training
The S.C. Vulnerable Adult Guardian ad Litem Program (SCVAGAL) is hosting a training for new volunteers on Friday, Jan. 24, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Training will take place at the Office for the Study of Aging (USC Arnold School of Public Health, Columbia) and lunch will be provided. Guardian ad Litem volunteers advocate for the best interests of abused, neglected or exploited vulnerable adults in cases brought before S.C. Family Courts.
