News + Press provides legal help to South Carolinians

COLUMBIA, S.C. (Oct. 28, 2013)—In November 2012, the S.C. Bar Pro Bono Program launched, an interactive resource available to the public for around-the-clock access to legal help.

The website allows individuals who meet the qualifications to post legal questions and have them answered by a volunteer attorney. It is accessible 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, allowing both the attorney and client to use the resource at their convenience.

Since its launch nearly a year ago, has received more than 500 questions from people throughout the state, and more than 75 attorneys have volunteered to provide answers. Common questions include family law issues such as divorce, custody, visitation and child support issues; landlord/tenant law; consumer law issues; probate; juvenile law; immigration; bankruptcy; and health care. provides a much-needed means of legal assistance to the citizens of South Carolina,” said Cindy Coker, public services director for the S.C. Bar. “The website is convenient and allows the public another avenue to the legal system in a simplified and non-intimidating manner. We’ve received a great response—from both the public and volunteer attorneys—and are pleased to be able to help the public with its legal needs.” also provides an opportunity for law students to work with practicing attorneys to answer questions during the First Friday Blitz, an all-day program during which USC School of Law students conduct research and draft answers to posted questions. Attorneys then review, edit and post answers to the site. The process gives students the opportunity to address real world questions and learn from the experience of practicing lawyers.

The S.C. Bar Pro Bono Program will hold a First Friday Blitz on Nov. 1, during which volunteer lawyers will spend the day responding to questions posted to the website.
