Nominate a colleague for the Trial and Appellate Advocacy Award
The S.C. Bar Trial and Appellate Advocacy Section is seeking nominations for its award, which recognizes a lawyer who has demonstrated outstanding commitment to trial and appellate advocacy in the legal profession. The deadline to submit nominations is Nov. 1. View the nomination criteria and instructions online.
2014 Leadership Academy application period open
The Bar is accepting applications for the 2014 Leadership Academy. This sixth installment of the Academy will address the following topics: lawyers in public service, professionalism, career/leadership development, work-life balance, the path to the judiciary, pro bono and community service and service to the Bar. Sessions will take place on the following dates: Jan. 25-26 (Bar Convention–Kiawah), Feb. 27 (Columbia), March 28 (Greenville), April 25 (Charleston) and May 8 (Columbia). The purpose of the Leadership Academy is to enhance the professional growth and leadership skills development of selected members to prepare them to make greater contributions to the legal profession and community. Interested applicants must meet and agree to the stated requirements and submit the required application and supporting documents by 5 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 8. New Ethics Advisory Opinion issued
The Ethics Advisory Committee has issued a new opinion. The text of all opinions is available online.
13-09 A lawyer may not pay for Preferred Closing Attorney status, where such status entails being listed as a Preferred Closing Attorney, the right to place advertising materials in the real estate agency’s office, and the right to participate in real estate agency meetings and training sessions, and such status does not include any other “commercially reasonable” terms.
Amendments to Rules 413 and 502, SCACR
The Judicial Department has posted amendments to Rules 413 and 502, SCACR, to its website. The Commission on Lawyer Conduct and the Commission on Judicial Conduct proposed amendments to the Rules for Lawyer Disciplinary Enforcement and the Rules for Judicial Disciplinary Enforcement, which clarify rules concerning a hearing panel chair's authority to address administrative matters; the procedures for declaring a matter closed, but not dismissed; the effect of a respondent's failure to appear at a hearing; and the documents which become public following the filing of formal charges.
Cole Scholarship applications for November CLE seminars due Oct. 25
Applications for Ronnie M. Cole Scholarships for November seminars are due Oct. 25. The fund provides scholarships to lawyers who need help with the cost of required CLE seminars necessary to maintain their law licenses. The scholarships will be used to attend a qualifying course offered by the S.C. Bar Continuing Legal Education Division. Any member of the S.C. Bar, in good standing, is eligible for a scholarship.
