YLD committee to be recognized with national award
The S.C. Bar Young Lawyers Division (YLD) Families Forever Committee will be recognized as an Angel in Adoption™ by the Congressional Coalition on Adoption Institute (CCAI) on October 8 in Washington, D.C. The Committee is being honored for its annual Families Forever Fairs, which provide free information on adoption, resource materials and one-on-one advice on the foster care and the adoption processes.

You be the judge (or coach)!
LRE is seeking attorney volunteers for its annual Mock Trial Programs, which teach middle and high school students about the legal system through trial role playing. Attorney judges are needed to score the competitions, and attorney coaches are needed to help prepare the teams. All attorney volunteers earn pro bono credit for their hours dedicated to the Mock Trial Program. The Middle School Mock Trial Competitions are: Nov. 2 (Conway); Nov. 9 (Columbia, Greenville, Lexington and N. Charleston); and Dec. 6-7 (Lexington). The High School Mock Trial Competitions are: Feb. 22, 2014 (Columbia, Conway, Greenville, Lexington and N. Charleston); and March 7-8, 2014 (Columbia or Lexington).
Sign up online, or contact Cynthia Cothran at or (803) 252-5139 for more information.

JQC phone interviews regarding judicial candidates
The Bar's Judicial Qualifications Committee (JQC) is currently making calls to the bench and bar. Participation from Bar members who have experience with any of the candidates is highly encouraged and valued. JQC policies provide that committee members complete at least 30 calls per candidate; you may be asked about multiple candidates in order to avoid duplicate calls. The information compiled by JQC is not attributed to those interviewed and is used to determine a collective opinion of the candidate. Thank you for your continued cooperation and support.

Playful ways to “Talk About Giving” with your family
Teaching a child to share is nothing short of a lifelong process. Even as grown men and women, we gain a better understanding of what it means to give by learning from the people around us who give so much of themselves and don’t expect thanks or credit. So, as a parent, grandparent or someone who mentors youth, how do you instill the giving spirit of a Foundation grantee in your children or grandchildren? Abacus Planning Group has the answer in their guest post on the
Foundation’s blog.

S.C. taxpayers should consider coverage options
The S.C. DOR is encouraging taxpayers to be patient in making a decision about continued credit monitoring services offered by any vendor until they have an opportunity to evaluate the services the state will cover. A formal announcement will be made next week as to which vendor was chosen to offer credit and identification protection. Individuals are covered through Experian for one year from their date of enrollment, and the state's option will be available prior to any lapse in coverage. Those citizens who choose to purchase their own protection can deduct a portion of that cost from their state income taxes. Visit for the latest information.
