May 06, 2013

COLUMBIA, S.C. (May 6, 2013) – The S.C. Bar Law Related Education Division (LRE) has named the 2013 High School Mock Trial Courtroom Journalist and Courtroom Artist State Champions.

Ya Fang of the Governor’s School for Science and Mathematics won the Courtroom Journalist competition and will be recognized on Sunday, May 19, during her school’s awards day. Ms. Fang took notes throughout the regional Mock Trial competition in preparation of writing a news article that accurately portrayed courtroom events. Following the competition, she worked under a deadline to submit her article to LRE, which was judged on accuracy, clarity, objectivity, fairness and style.

Elissa Na of Bob Jones Academy won the Courtroom Sketch Artist competition and was recognized April 23 at her school’s awards day. During the regional Mock Trial competition, Ms. Na sketched pieces that depicted actual courtroom scenes and submitted her work at the conclusion of each trial day. The sketches were then judged on accuracy of proportion, realism, authenticity with regard to traditional courtroom sketching, figure/ground relationship, and use of contrast.

The roles of courtroom journalist and courtroom sketch artist were introduced in the 2011 competition and are designed to broaden participation across a more diverse group of students. To see past winning entries, visit
