Board of Governors meets
The Board of Governors met today by conference call. The Board created the Lawyers in Transition Task Force, Diversity in the Bar Task Force, Bar-Law School Relationships Task Force, Retirement of Lawyers Task Force and Professional Liability Committee. The Congressional Outreach Task Force, Criminal Record Expungement Task Force, Guardianship/Conservatorship Task Force, Judicial System Funding Task Force, Law School for Journalists Task Force and Professional Liability Options Task Force were scheduled to be sunsetted on May 17 due to completion of their work.
The Board approved a special pro bono award, and development of a series of free PMAP webinars on technology.

Appointments to CLE Commission
The Court appointed the following members to the Commission on Continuing Legal Education and Specialization: W. Steven Johnson and Stuart W. Snow Jr. The Court reappointed Tiffany Freeman Hendricks, Elizabeth W. Settle and Hon. Alison Renee Lee to the Commission. The Court appointed Steven T. Moon as Chairman and Tiffany Freeman Hendricks as Secretary.

Volunteers needed for mock trial juries

The S.C. Supreme Court affirmed the PCR court’s dismissal of Sigmon’s application for post-conviction relief, finding Sigmon did not present evidence showing he was afforded ineffective assistance of counsel.
Sigmon v. State, No. 27233, is available online.
The Court granted certiorari and held that the trial judge abused his discretion in finding the jury consented to continued deliberations as required by Section 14-7-1330 of the S.C. Code. Accordingly, the trial court erred in declining to declare a mistrial, and the Court of Appeals erred in affirming that decision. The Court reversed Barnes’ conviction and sentence and remanded the case for a new trial.

In this appeal from the reversal of an order terminating a biological mother’s parental rights, the Court reversed the decision of the Court of Appeals and held that the family court properly terminated the biological mother's parental rights pursuant to Section 63-7-2570(8) of the S.C. Code. The Court directed DSS to immediately implement a plan consistent with the findings of the family court.
