Java security. Java is a popular computer programming language used to power Internet applications. Because it’s used for so many applications and websites, chances are, you have Java installed on your computer. Recently, the U.S. Computer Emergency Readiness Team (
US-CERT) advised users to disable Java due to a serious security threat. Java has released a patch to fix the security flaw which you can download from Java’s website. However, US-CERT still recommends disabling Java. For step-by-step instructions on how to disable Java on your computer, click here. Continue to monitor Google News for updates. Advance Sheet update
January 9, 2012
The S.C. Court of Appeals held that Broadnax’s prior convictions of armed robbery do not qualify as crimes of dishonesty pursuant to Rule 609(a)(2), SCRE, because they were not coupled with additional false statements or acts of deceit beyond the basic crime itself. The court concluded that the admission of these convictions created a high degree of prejudice and reversed and remanded for new trial. Because the determination of this issue was dispositive, the court declined to address Broadnax's remaining arguments relating to a solicitor's discretion in noticing Life without Parole (LWOP) and the trial court's denial of his request to inform the jury of his potential LWOP sentence.
State v. Broadnax, No. 5071, is available
Judge Thomas concurred in part and dissented in part in a separate opinion.

Member reinstatement
By order of January 10, the Court granted Kenneth L. Edwards’ petition for reinstatement to the practice of law.

Member resignations
By orders of January 11, the Court accepted the resignations from the Bar of Lillie Currington Hart and Heather Hunt Watroba.
